Summary:
At present, there is a general aging of the population, especially in the countries of Western and Eastern Europe and North America. Even though aging is a physiological process, older people often have multiple chronic comorbidities. Comorbid conditions exacerbate the complex medical, functional, psychological, and social needs of these patients, which may compromise their ability to live independently prior to hospitalization with a stroke. Stroke can be classified according to various criteria: ischemic and hemorrhagic; the presence or absence of clinical symptoms or etiological factors. Drug management of the risk factors of the disease under discussion in the elderly is complicated by polypharmacy and the risk of side effects. Arterial hypertension, atrial fibrillation, elevated cholesterol levels, and the use of antiplatelet drugs are the most common risk factors for stroke in older patients. Clinicians should make a broad differential diagnosis when stroke is suspected. Seizures, conversion or somatoform disorders, migraine headache, and hypoglycemia are the most common symptoms of a stroke. One of the common symptoms of a stroke is a fall or loss of consciousness. Falls in stroke survivors are usually attributed to a combination of factors that may or may not be associated with stroke, and stroke is only one of the major comorbidities affecting the elderly. To date, there are no published data on effective strategies to prevent falls in stroke. Falls in stroke survivors remain an understudied area with no evidence of effective therapy for primary or secondary prevention of falls after stroke. Although the incidence of stroke in developed countries is declining despite an aging population, the absolute number of new strokes per year will continue to rise worldwide. With the burden of stroke and falls rapidly increasing, more research is now urgently needed in this area.
Keywords stroke, fall, arterial hypertension, atrial fibrillation, elderly patients
