Summary:
As a result of an aging population, dementia is an increasingly serious problem, especially in the health sector. However, cognitive impairment is often not systematically assessed, especially during hospital stays for other reasons. However, cognitive impairment is associated with a number of geriatric syndromes, including depression, delirium, dysphagia, and non-adherence to previously recommended treatment. Correct substantiated diagnosis allows for timely detection of cognitive disorders and prevents the progression to severe forms of such disorders. A literature review was carried out on promising new approaches to the diagnosis of cognitive impairment and dementia in the elderly (60-65 and more). Such approaches are easily applicable in clinical practice, and also help to a large extent in the diagnosis of functional cognitive disorders. This article presents the main diagnostic signs that signal impairments to cognitive functions, which will allow doctors of various profiles to timely and reasonably approach the treatment of a particular patient.
Keywords cognitive impairment, dementia, diagnosis, neurodegenerative diseases.
